Central
Thai Cuisine when you golf in Hua Hin
A Rich Tradition
With
Bangkok as the heart of culture and trade in Thailand, it’s
not surprising that food from central Thailand is regarded as “classic
Thai” cuisine. The capital offers everything on the culinary map,
but there are many distinctive dishes that originated in the region.
Central Thai dishes tend to be richly flavored; a blend of hot, sour,
savory and especially sweet tastes – usually served with khao jao
(white rice) from the fertile central plains. Pork, chicken and seafood
are all common, though beef is less popular.
Some
Like it Hot
Local
cooks combine a myriad of spices with chilies to make some fiery dishes.
A delicious example is coconut curry, which comes in a variety of colors
and flavors, and is a mainstay of central Thailand's daily fare.
If you can handle chilies, try the spicy kaeng phet, (hot curry), kaeng
khiaw-waan (green curry), or the milder and thicker kaeng phenaeng.
Other full flavored classics are phat phet, (basil and chili paste stir
fried with pork), the legendary and very healthy tom yam soup, and yam
(hot and spicy salads including meat or seafood).
The China Connection
Ethnic Chinese make up a large proportion of the population
and have made a big contribution to the cuisine – usually in the
form of milder dishes such as kaeng jeut, a mild soup of pork, mung bean
noodles, bitter gourd, and tofu. Kuaytiew phet, (duck and noodle soup)
is also Chinese in origin and can be found on virtually every street that
serves food. |
